Careers and Pay for Machine Operators and Site Workers

What the training costs, and what published salary figures say the work pays

The question that comes before enrolling is usually what the work pays. This page sets out what each operator course costs at Fundza, what published South African sources say the roles earn, and which course to take for each one.

What each operator course costs

These are the machine and site-safety courses Fundza runs most often, with the current fee and duration. Fees come straight from the course records, and every course below has its own page with the entry detail, the assessment and the certificate.

Most machine certificates are valid for 24 months, after which the operator needs a refresher to stay certified. Refresher fees are lower than the full course and are listed on each course page. Full fees for everything Fundza runs are on the prices page.

Operator salary figures in South Africa

Pay figures for South African operators are thinly published, and much of what ranks for these searches is foreign data. Where a dated South African source exists, Fundza publishes it with the sample size, so you can judge how much weight it carries. Where one does not, the figure is left out rather than guessed.

Where a source publishes an hourly or annual figure, the monthly equivalent is what to work from, because that is how operator pay is quoted in South Africa. Crane shows why no single average is given: the two sources differ by roughly three times. Welding and plumbing figures are for the qualified trades, and Fundza runs the aide-level programmes that sit below them, which the welding and plumbing pages explain in full.

Roles not listed here have no South African figures published to this standard yet, so they are left out rather than guessed. Each role that does have figures carries them on its own page: excavator, forklift, dump truck and crane operator training.

These are third-party published figures, not Fundza figures. Fundza does not promise a job, a placement or any particular wage. What an operator earns depends on the employer, the site and the hours worked.

What the training costs against the pay

The useful comparison is not the fee on its own, it is the fee against a month of pay. Forklift training is R6 010 against a published monthly average of R9 113, which is roughly two thirds of a month. Excavator training is R9 295 against R6 266, which is roughly a month and a half.

That ratio is the figure job boards cannot publish, because they do not sell training. It is also the figure most training providers leave out, because it invites the comparison. It is the reason the fees sit on this page next to the pay.

Starting out

The cheapest way in is usually a short safety course rather than a machine ticket. SHE representative training is two days at R1 100, and that certificate runs for 36 months. First aid and fire fighting are also short and inexpensive, and employers ask for them constantly.

A machine ticket is a bigger commitment: five days, and from R5 630. It certifies you on one machine class and one only. An operator certified on an articulated dump truck is not certified on a rigid one, so pick the machine the work actually uses rather than the cheapest course on the list.

Find your course

Every course below has its own page with the fee, the duration, what the week covers, how you are assessed and how long the certificate lasts.
