What the course covers
The course works through the safety regulations that apply to earthmoving plant, then through the dozer and the ground conditions that decide how it can be worked.
Learners cover machine components and controls, pre-operation and daily inspections, tracking and manoeuvring, blade angle, tilt and pitch, pushing, spreading and levelling technique, slot dozing and stockpile work, ripping where fitted, working on slopes and near edges, operating safely around people and other plant, and correct shutdown and parking. The operating work is assessed practically on the machine.
How you are assessed and what you receive
Assessment covers a written knowledge test and a practical on the machine, where the learner inspects the dozer and then pushes, spreads and levels material under supervision. On successful completion the learner is certificated against SAQA unit standard 262729, and the certificate can be downloaded from the Fundza portal as well as issued directly.
What this certificate is worth
Dozers work on slopes, benches and tip edges where the consequences of a mistake are severe, so mines check this certificate carefully at induction. It proves the operator is competent in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Learners can download it from the Fundza portal at any time.

The dozer moves the volume; the grader finishes it. On most mines the two machines work the same area in sequence.
