What the course covers
The course teaches learners to inspect and operate a rigid dump truck according to manufacturer specifications and the requirements of the worksite.
Learners cover truck components and controls, pre-operation and daily inspections, positioning for loading and working with an excavator or loader, haul road discipline, speed, spacing and right of way, working in dust and poor visibility, tipping technique at edges and stockpiles, the stability risks of a raised body, and correct parking and shutdown. The operating work is assessed practically on the machine.
How you are assessed and what you receive
Assessment covers a written knowledge test and a practical on the machine, where the learner inspects the truck, is loaded, hauls a cycle and tips under supervision. On successful completion the learner is certificated against SAQA unit standard 262731, and the certificate can be downloaded from the Fundza portal as well as issued directly.
What this certificate is worth
Haul trucks are the largest machines most people on a mine will ever share a road with, so operator competence is checked closely at induction and in contractor audits. The certificate proves competence in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Learners can download it from the Fundza portal at any time.

They do the same job on different ground. A site with poor haul roads runs ADTs; a site with good roads gets more out of rigid trucks. Operators moving between them need both.
