Fundza trains operators on two kinds of dump truck: the articulated dump truck, usually called an ADT, and the 40 ton rigid dump truck. Both courses run five days at the centre in Mokopane or on your own site, and both certificates are valid for 24 months.
Which one you need depends on the machine you will actually drive. The two trucks handle differently and are certified separately, so a ticket on one is not a ticket on the other.
An articulated dump truck bends in the middle on a pivot joint, which lets it work on soft, uneven and steep ground. A rigid dump truck has a fixed chassis, carries more, and is built for firm haul roads on larger mines and quarries.
If you are not sure which machine your employer runs, ask before you book. Operators are certified per machine class, so training on the wrong truck means paying twice.
| Course | Machine | Duration | Fee | Refresher | Certificate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ADT Dump Truck | Articulated dump truck | 5 days | R8 052 | R3 883 | 24 months |
| 40 Ton Rigid Dump Truck | Rigid chassis, 40 ton class | 5 days | R8 822 | R5 060 | 24 months |
The ADT course certifies you on the articulated dump truck, the machine most used on construction sites and on the softer ground around open-cast operations. Training runs five days and the fee is R8 052.
Because the truck pivots behind the cab, it turns tighter than a rigid truck and holds traction where a rigid machine would struggle. Most of the practical time goes on controlling that articulation on gradients and in confined tipping areas.
See the full ADT dump truck course, including what the week covers and how you are assessed.
The rigid dump truck course certifies you on the 40 ton class rigid machine used for bulk haulage on mines and in quarries. It also runs five days, at R8 822, and the refresher is R5 060.
A rigid truck carries its load over a fixed frame, so it needs prepared haul roads and a different approach to loading, braking and tipping. The practical work concentrates on load distribution, haul road discipline and controlled tipping at the dump point.

Both courses follow the same shape: theory first, then practical time on the machine, then assessment. You learn the pre-start inspection, the controls, safe loading and tipping, haul road rules, and what to do when something goes wrong.
The practical component is where most of the week goes. Operating a loaded truck on a gradient is a skill that only comes from doing it under supervision.
Assessment on a dump truck course is both written and practical. You answer theory questions on the machine and the safety rules, then demonstrate that you can operate the truck competently and safely.
On passing you receive a certificate for that machine class, valid for 24 months. Learners can download the certificate from the Fundza portal, and an employer can verify it through the accreditation page.
Both dump truck certificates run for 24 months. After that the operator needs a refresher to stay certified, and employers are generally the ones who track the expiry date.
A refresher is shorter and cheaper than the full course: R3 883 for the ADT and R5 060 for the 40 ton rigid. Book it before the certificate lapses rather than after.
Fundza trains groups on site anywhere in South Africa, which for dump truck work usually makes more sense than sending operators away. Your own machines, your own haul roads and your own ground conditions are what the operators will be working on.
Travel costs and the minimum group size are quoted per job. Send the headcount, the machines and the location through group bookings.
Five days for both the articulated dump truck and the 40 ton rigid dump truck. That covers theory, practical time on the machine and assessment.
R8 052 for the ADT dump truck course and R8 822 for the 40 ton rigid dump truck course. Refreshers are R3 883 and R5 060. Full prices for every course are on the prices page.
24 months, on both courses. After that an operator needs a refresher to stay certified.
No. Operators are certified per machine class, so a certificate on the articulated dump truck does not cover the rigid truck. Moving an operator between the two is a new training event.
