What a quality assurer does at Fundza

A quality assurer is the person who checks the training against the rules before anyone outside has to. Nyaku Thema looks at how a course was delivered, how the learner was assessed, and whether the record behind it holds up.

The aim is consistency. A learner who trains in March should be assessed to the same standard as one who trains in October. An employer should receive the same quality of certificate either way.

The four things Nyaku Thema checks

  • Training documentation — that the written record of a course matches what was actually delivered.
  • Learner registrations — that every learner on a course is registered correctly before training starts.
  • Assessment processes — that each course is assessed by the method that course requires, theory and practical alike.
  • Accreditation requirements — that facilitators, assessors and moderators are registered for the work they are doing.

Each of these is measured against the guidelines of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). The same applies to the rules of the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) for the sector concerned.

Nine years of experience

Nyaku Thema brings nine years of quality assurance experience to Fundza. Length of experience counts here because requirements change. The person doing the checking has to know what the current standard asks for, not what it asked for three years ago.

His focus is on compliance, consistency and continuous improvement. Where a check turns up the same gap twice, the answer is to change the process, not to correct the file again.

What Nyaku Thema reviews on this website

The compliance pages on this site set out what South African safety law asks of an employer. Nyaku Thema reviews each one before it goes live, and again when a requirement changes. An out of date page on this subject is a real risk to the person reading it.

Every page he reviews carries a line naming him as the reviewer.

Accreditation and certificates

Which bodies Fundza trains to, and how an employer can verify a certificate Fundza has issued, are set out on the accreditation page. Questions about a particular course, its assessment or its certificate can go to the office in Mokopane through the contact page.

Training a team?

Fundza trains groups on site anywhere in South Africa, and at its centre in Mokopane. The same checks described on this page apply to a group booking as to an individual learner.
