What the course covers
The course works through the Occupational Health and Safety Act Driven Machinery Regulations as they apply to lifting tackle, then through the gear and how it is matched to a load.
Learners cover types of sling and their construction, safe working load and rated capacity marking, inspection and rejection criteria, estimating load mass, finding the centre of gravity, sling angle and the effect on leg loading, choke, basket and vertical hitches, protecting slings against sharp edges, and attaching and balancing regular loads. The rigging work is assessed practically.
How you are assessed and what you receive
Assessment covers a written knowledge test and a practical, where the learner selects and inspects the gear, rigs a load and confirms it is balanced before a supervised lift. On successful completion the learner is certificated against SAQA unit standard 12481, and the certificate can be downloaded from the Fundza portal as well as issued directly.
What this certificate is worth
Lifting tackle sits under the Driven Machinery Regulations and has to be used by a competent person. This certificate is the proof, and it is frequently checked at induction on mining, industrial and construction sites. Learners can download it from the Fundza portal whenever proof is needed.
