What the course covers
The programme runs two weeks of classroom theory followed by four weeks of practical work, and is aimed squarely at people with no previous electrical background.
The theory covers basic electrical principles, current, voltage and resistance, series and parallel circuits, cables and protective devices, reading simple wiring diagrams, and the safety rules that apply around live equipment. The practical weeks cover using hand tools and test instruments, wiring simple circuits, terminating and connecting cable, fault finding on basic installations, and isolation and lock-out practice.
How you are assessed and what you receive
Learners are assessed continuously through the practical weeks and on a final practical task, with a written component covering the theory. On successful completion the learner receives a certificate of competence from Fundza Training Institute, which can be downloaded from the Fundza portal as well as issued directly.
What this certificate is worth
An electrical aide certificate is what allows a learner to be placed with an electrician as a trained assistant rather than a general hand, and it is the normal first step towards an apprenticeship and trade test. Employers use it as evidence that someone understands isolation and basic safety before they are put near a board. Learners can download it from the Fundza portal at any time.
