What the course covers
The course works through the Occupational Health and Safety Act Driven Machinery Regulations as they apply to lifting machinery, then through the crane itself.
Learners cover crane components and controls, pre-use inspection of the crane, hooks, slings and shackles, outrigger deployment and ground bearing, the load chart and how capacity falls as radius increases, lifting, slewing and placing loads, working near overhead power lines and structures, hand and radio signals, and stowing the crane correctly for travel. The lifting work is assessed practically on the machine.
How you are assessed and what you receive
Assessment covers a written knowledge test and a practical lift, where the learner inspects the crane, sets up on outriggers, interprets the load chart and lifts, slews and lands a load under supervision. On successful completion the learner is certificated against SAQA unit standard 242978, and the certificate can be downloaded from the Fundza portal as well as issued directly.
What this certificate is worth
Truck-mounted cranes do most of their work on client sites and public roads, which means the operator is regularly asked to produce proof of competence before offloading. The certificate is what satisfies that request and what the Driven Machinery Regulations require. Learners can download it from the Fundza portal at any time.

A truck mount crane exists to service its own load. A mobile crane is brought in because lifting is the job. The lifting principles overlap but the certificates are separate.
