What the course covers
The course covers what a workplace first aider has to be able to do in the minutes before professional help arrives, which is where outcomes are decided.
Learners cover the legal duties of an appointed first aider, scene safety and personal protection, primary and secondary patient assessment, basic life support and CPR, recovery position, choking, controlling bleeding and treating shock, burns, fractures and sprains, and recording and handing over to emergency services. Practical work is done on a manikin and with a first aid kit.
How you are assessed and what you receive
Assessment covers a written knowledge test and a practical, where the learner assesses a simulated casualty, performs CPR on a manikin and manages a bleed. On successful completion the learner is certificated against SAQA unit standard 119567, and the certificate can be downloaded from the Fundza portal as well as issued directly.
What this certificate is worth
The General Safety Regulations require employers to appoint trained first aiders once a workplace reaches a certain size, so this certificate is a compliance requirement as well as a practical one. It is checked at site induction and during safety audits. Learners can download the certificate from the Fundza portal at any time.

Training runs at the Fundza Training Institute centre in Mokopane, and on site at your own premises anywhere in the country. Level 1 is the baseline appointment most workplaces need. Level 2 is for sites whose own hazards mean a first aider has to do more than stabilise and wait.
Where this course can take you
First aid level 1 is normally the first safety certificate a worker holds. The usual next steps are First Aid Level 2 for higher-risk sites, and Fire Fighting Level 1 and SHE Representative training alongside it. Many employers book all of these together in the Safety Combo.
