What the course covers
The course builds on basic fire fighting and moves from putting out a small fire alone to working as part of a team on a fire that has taken hold.
Learners cover fire behaviour, development and classification, the extinguishing media and how each works, hose reels, branches and larger fire fighting equipment, equipment checks and maintenance, team roles and command, containment and attack procedures, water supply and hose handling, and post-incident procedures. Practical work is done on live fires.
How you are assessed and what you receive
Assessment covers a written knowledge test and practical work on live fire, where the learner operates as part of a team to contain and extinguish a developed fire under supervision. On successful completion the learner is certificated against the relevant unit standard, and the certificate can be downloaded from the Fundza portal as well as issued directly.
What this certificate is worth
Where a risk assessment shows a site could face more than a bin fire, a Level 1 appointment is not enough and auditors will say so. This certificate is what shows a site has people trained to mount an organised response, and it is checked during safety audits and contractor reviews. Learners can download it from the Fundza portal at any time.

Training runs at the Fundza Training Institute centre in Mokopane, and on site at your own premises. On-site delivery is generally better for Level 2, because team drills are only useful if they are run on the building and equipment the team will actually defend. Level 2 assumes the competencies in Level 1. Which one you need comes out of your own risk assessment rather than headcount.

Fire Fighting Level 2 sits at the top of the fire stack at Fundza. It is usually held alongside First Aid Level 1 or Level 2 and SHE Representative training, and many employers start people on the Safety Combo before adding Level 2.

How long is Fire Fighting Level 2 and what does it cost?
Fire Fighting Level 2 runs over 2 days and costs R1 562 at Fundza. The fee covers the training, the assessment and certification, and you can download your certificate afterwards. Group bookings for on-site training are quoted per booking.
Do I need Fire Fighting Level 1 first?
Fire Fighting Level 2 builds on Level 1, so learners normally hold Level 1 before doing it. If you are booking a team and are not sure what they already hold, send us the list and we will tell you which level each person needs.
Is there a practical on a real fire?
Yes. Fire Fighting Level 2 is assessed in writing and on live fire practicals, including work with hose reels and larger equipment as part of a team.
Who on a site should hold Level 2?
Fire Fighting Level 2 suits the people named on the emergency plan as the fire team: the ones expected to stay and fight a developed fire with hose reels while everyone else evacuates. Everyone else is usually trained to Level 1.
Can Fundza train our team at our workplace?
Yes. Fundza trains fire fighting groups on site anywhere in South Africa, for mines, construction companies, municipalities and other employers. Group size and travel are quoted per booking, and individual learners train at the Mokopane centre.
