What the course covers
The course builds on basic fire fighting and moves from putting out a small fire alone to working as part of a team on a fire that has taken hold.
Learners cover fire behaviour, development and classification, the extinguishing media and how each works, hose reels, branches and larger fire fighting equipment, equipment checks and maintenance, team roles and command, containment and attack procedures, water supply and hose handling, and post-incident procedures. Practical work is done on live fires.
How you are assessed and what you receive
Assessment covers a written knowledge test and practical work on live fire, where the learner operates as part of a team to contain and extinguish a developed fire under supervision. On successful completion the learner is certificated against SAQA unit standard 12484, and the certificate can be downloaded from the Fundza portal as well as issued directly.
What this certificate is worth
Where a risk assessment shows a site could face more than a bin fire, a level 1 appointment is not enough and auditors will say so. This certificate is what shows a site has people trained to mount an organised response, and it is checked during safety audits and contractor reviews. Learners can download it from the Fundza portal at any time.

Training runs at the Fundza Training Institute centre in Mokopane, and on site at your own premises. On-site delivery is generally better for level 2, because team drills are only useful if they are run on the building and equipment the team will actually defend. Level 2 assumes the competencies in level 1. Which one you need comes out of your own risk assessment rather than headcount.
Where this course can take you
Fire fighting level 2 sits at the top of the fire stack at Fundza. It is usually held alongside First Aid Level 1 or Level 2 and SHE Representative training, and many employers start people on the Safety Combo before adding level 2.
